TECHNIQUE B: SQUARE BLANKET:

STEP 1: Swaddle the baby on a square blanket. Place the baby's head above the middle of one edge.

STEP 2: Tuck the right arm down and fold the right side of the blanket over the baby between the left arm and under the left side.

STEP 3: Tuck the left arm down and fold the left corner of the blanket over the baby and under the right side.

STEP 4: Fold or twist the bottom of the blanket loosely and tuck it under one side of the baby. Legs should be able to bend up and out.

When using a commercial swaddling blanket, make sure it is loose around baby's hip and legs.

CAUTION:

1. The American Academy of the Pediatrics and the U.S. Consumer Safety Commission recommends against putting Infants in a crib with loose bedding.

Do not wrap baby higher then shoulders so baby's face does not be covered.

2. Always place a baby on back to sleep. Talk to a health care professional on swaddling and safe sleep practices.

3. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have made recommendations for safe bedding practices for babies.

When putting infants under 12 months to sleep, remove pillows, quilts, comforters and other soft items from the crib.
